Scoliosis and Spine Treatment Methods

At ScolioAustin, we specialize in non-surgical, evidence-based scoliosis treatment methods designed to improve spinal alignment, posture, and overall function. Our approach integrates multiple globally recognized techniques, ensuring each patient receives a customized and effective treatment plan.
The Schroth Method: A 3D Approach to Scoliosis
Developed in Germany in the 1920s by Katharina Schroth, the Schroth Method is a conservative, three-dimensional exercise approach for treating scoliosis and postural dysfunction. It focuses on spinal alignment through specific breathing techniques, postural awareness, and customized exercises. Over the past 80 years, it has become the standard non-surgical treatment for scoliosis across Europe and is gaining recognition in the U.S. for its effectiveness.
What’s The Story With The Body Blocks?
The blocks represent the 3D nature of a scoliosis.
The blocks are shifted and rotated to represent the regions of the spine (cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacrum / pelvis) that are laterally, posteriorly and anteriorly rotated with respect to one’s curve pattern.
The smaller side of the block represents the concave side of a curve, and the wider (and taller) side of the block represents the convex side of a curve.
Other Advanced Scoliosis Treatment Methods
While the Schroth Method is a cornerstone of scoliosis care, we integrate other highly regarded European methods, including:
SEAS (Scientific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis, Italy) – Focuses on active self-correction and neuromotor control to stabilize the spine.
Lyon Method (France) – One of the oldest scoliosis approaches, combining 3D spinal mobilization, posture training, and the ARTbrace system.
Rigo Concept (Spain) – An evolution of Schroth principles, refining individualized therapy techniques based on spinal curvature and postural assessment.
By blending these techniques, we create individualized scoliosis-specific exercise (PSSE) programs tailored to each patient’s condition, ensuring optimal outcomes.
Our Three-Phase Treatment Approach
Our scoliosis treatment progresses through three carefully structured phases:
Phase 1: Assessment & Foundation
Comprehensive clinical evaluation, including posture, flexibility, muscle strength, and balance assessment.
Education on postural alignment and understanding spinal curvature.
Introduction to foundational exercises for spinal stabilization and pain reduction.
Phase 2: Strengthening & Integration
Progressive, seated exercises to enhance core stability.
Neuromuscular control and proprioceptive training for improved posture.
Modification of daily activities to support long-term spinal health.
Phase 3: Functional Application & Independence
Dynamic balance exercises and movement integration.
Transition to recreational activities with modified techniques.
Optional group classes for continued support and maintenance.
